Arriving to lock up the hide this afternoon I stopped for a few minutes to see what was about.
Almost immediately I heard a piercing squeak and was treated to this splendid view of a kingfisher.
Earlier in the day, in poorer light, I had seen this bird acting very strangely.
Soon it became clear what was going on.
I'm still not sure whether these birds were displaying to keep each other apart or out of attraction to each other.
Kingfishers certainly defend their own feeding territories in the winter so this may well be aggression rather than affection.
What I do know is that they should definitely have been looking behind them!
