The Frohawk Drive, New Forest
Wednesday July 12th 2017
I'm used to seeing lots of silver-washed fritillaries at this superb spot near Brockenhurst in Hampshire, but today I saw more than ever with at one point as many as ten feeding together.
That sequence showed the beautifully irridescent underside of this huge butterfly.
This next one shows the upperparts as well.
Both butterflies are females, you might be able to spot a bright orange male in the background on this video.
Also bright orange but far smaller the large skippers were out in huge numbers today.
Probably the best sighting of the day though was this dark form of large skipper.
