Trip Report

What turned out to be a very pleasant walk in crisp autumn weather got off to a good start when a Dartford Warbler popped up right next to the van, even though some of us only heard it! One or two more were heard on the walk to the first hide and several Song Thrushes were seen, probably recent arrivals from the continent.

The hide gave us distant views of a Yellow-legged Gull and a Greenshank and a slightly closer Mistle Thrush and several Lapwings. A group of Roe Deer were useful to compare with the Sikas seen later.

Back on the path we had close views of a Goldcrest and even more Song Thrushes. Reaching the farm a Red Fox dashed off into the bushes and was later seen crossing the field. Just as we left the farm buildings a beautiful Barn Owl swooped close past us and disappeared into a barn.

A group of female Sika Deer with their young were very interested in my camera!

The hide had plenty of birds in front of it including lots of Wigeon and Curlew and another three Yellow-legged Gulls. We had been waiting for about 15 minutes when the bird of the day glided past - a superb Hen Harrier. Sadly some crows chased it off but we had an excellent view as it passed just in front of the hide.
Walking back we saw at least 5 Kestrels and even more Song Thrushes.
