Dorset Walks

Friday April 25th       Cogden Beach

list of species seen

Trip Report

From the new National Trust car park we walked towards the beach seeing several Whitethroats on the way. Turning south we walked along the edge of the meadows and came across plenty of Cowslips.
A bit further on we cam a cross a small patch of the rare Adderstongue Fern.
Approaching West Bexington we reached a field of wet grassland containing a number of very bright Green-winged Orchids.
Our journey back was along Chesil Beach, where we found huge numbers of Sea Kale plants and a patch of the much rarer Sea Sandwort.
Another part of the beach had lots of young Sea Holly plants pushing up through the shingle.
Apart from all these rare plants there were plenty of good birds to see including a mixed flock of terns fishing just off the shore and a flock of 20 Whimbrel on the hillside.
