Dorset Walks

Thursday February 16th       Lodmoor RSPB Reserve

Wildfowl, Raptors and Bitterns

Another bird-watching walk at this top reserve.
We meet at the eastern end of the reserve avoiding the very awkward width restrictor at the main car park. This part of the reserve sometimes holds a few Water Pipits and usually a Stonechat or two. Stonechat

We'll walk into the main reserve examining all the wet areas for ducks and waders. Shoveler and Gadwall should be easy to find with a good chance of Snipe at the edge of the vegetation.
Birds of prey often take advantage of the abundance of food here, with Peregrines, Short-eared Owls and Harriers (Marsh and Hen) frequent visitors. Bitterns often fly over from Radipole but are very difficult to see. Recently a Spoonbill has been a regular visitor. Bittern
